Prof Assad, who was addressing the Workers’ Council of this office that opened its meeting yesterday, said the situation has caused the office to fail to pay contractors, who built CAG regional offices across the country.
“We are in a very difficult situation financially,” he said.
Prof Assad said the government has decreased the allocation of money to his office. According to him, apart from the decrease of the amount, the funds haven’t been being disbursed on time. “For example, in the 2015/16 budget, in the Other Charges vote Sh8 billion was allocated to my office but what was actually disbursed is too embarrassing to disclose,” said Prof Assad, an economist.
He reiterated his call for the government to increase funds allocation to his office to enable it discharge its responsibilities efficiently. The budget allocation to the CAG’s office was slashed from Sh63.5 billion in 2015/16 budget to Sh32.3 billion in the current financial year.
