Dar es Salaam. Land O’ Lakes International Development has urged agriculture and business stakeholders to support it to implement its programmes for women development.
The non-governmental organisation will tomorrow organise an event here to raise Sh150 million to help women to adopt agribusiness practices.
The event aims at enabling the Centre for Advancement of Women in Agriculture in Tanzania (Cawat) to build capacity for women to improve agribusiness.
“The proceeds from the fundraising event will be used to train women to develop their business skills. We will also train them on how to pitch their businesses to potential investors, promote their innovations to potential customers and link them with potential investors,’’ said Land O’ Lake International Development chief of party Rose Kingamkono.
The majority of Tanzania’s population live in rural areas and are engaged in agriculture.
“Nevertheless, these women face a myriad of problems. For instance, they have to grapple with archaic customs that deprive them of decision-making at the household level, ensure that the man continues to call the shots in all farming-related activities, even in those areas where women contribute immensely,” she said.
Cawat board chairperson Victoria Kisyombe said the programme was part of the United States Agency for International Development-funded Innovation and Gender Equality project, which for the past four-and-a-half years has been at the forefront of promoting Tanzania’s household food security programmes.
The initiative ends next month.
Currently, Cawat is in its early stages of transitioning from being an IGE-supported entity to one that is fully independent. As is the case with all new organisations, forming a fully-functioning, well-managed and financially viable independent entity is a lengthy process hence the call for the fundraising event.
