Buchosa. More than 50 families in Kanyala village, Bulyaheke Ward in Buchosa have been rendered homeless after their homes were destroyed by fire Sunday.
Property worth over Sh 20 million was destroyed in the incident that occurred at dawn.
Mwanza Regional Police Commander Ahmed Msangi confirmed the incident, but said only make-shift shelters were destroyed in the incident. No death was reported.
Kanyala village chairman Andrea Mkama said the blaze was caused by a burning candle in one of the houses.
“A man called Adara Samson admitted that he had lit a candle and fell asleep without putting it out,” said Mr Mkama.
One of the eye-witnesses, Mr Laferi Bituro, said they noticed the fire around 3:45am and that some people had gone fishing while others were drinking booze elsewhere.
Sengerema District Commissioner Emmanuel Kipole urged the villagers affected to remain calm while the government looked into ways to handle the matter.
“This is the second time a fire break out is reported. People should take precautionary measures to avoid such incidents in future. You never know, the worst could happen next time,” said the DC.
