Wema: I'm leaving CCM to fight for democracy

Dar es Salaam. Miss Tanzania 2006 Wema Sepetu yesterday  ditched CCM to join Chadema.
She told reporters at her Sinza home here that she had done so voluntarily in search for democracy.
A number of Chadema members and supporters also attended the event. She described the ordeal she went through as a suspect in a campaign launched by Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Paul Makonda in the past two weeks as a humiliation by the ruling party.
“During my detention I was treated badly and my friends were threatened and barred from visiting me only because of allegations,” she lamented.
She said she did a lot for CCM during the 2015 General Election campaigns, only to be humiliated.
“I have joined Chadema not because I am mad. I want to fight for  democracy and dignity of Tanzanians.”
Wema, who is also an artiste, urged her fans to rally behind her and fight for freedom. “I believe that majority of my fans will join Chadema.”
Her mother Mariam Sepetu, who also decamped from CCM  to join Chadema, said she was hurt the way her daughter was treated.
“That is enough reason for me to leave CCM,” she said. “ My husband [ambassador Isaac Sepetu] and I were both staunch CCM members. It never crossed my mind that one day I would leave CCM but now I have done so because I also want to fight for democracy as a Chadema  member,” she said.
Until yesterday, Mrs Sepetu was the CCM Nzasa branch chair.
CCM Ideology and Publicity secretary Humphrey Polepole could not be reached to comment on the matter.
