Dar es Salaam. The government yesterday dismissed rumours of former President Ali Hassan Mwinyi’s death.
Tanzania Information Services director Hassan Abbas said in a statement that the rumours were unfounded and people should ignore them.
“Mzee Mwinyi is fit as a fiddle and he is going on with his activities uninterruptedly. On Thursday he attended a dinner organised by Kuwait Embassy in Tanzania in commemoration of Kuwait’s National day and today (yesterday) he has visited former Prime Minister Cleopa David Msuya,” reads part of the statement.
Dr Abbas reminded social media users to be careful with what they encounter because those who devised the platforms had intention of facilitating wide communication.
“Let us not misuse the platforms,” he said.
He also noted that it was illegal under Section 16 of the Cybercrimes Act, 2015 for anyone to broadcast, publish or disseminate wrongful or unfounded information on social media.
On behalf of the government, Dr Abbas apologised to Mr Mwinyi and his family and other people who in one way or another were affected by the rumours.
