A 20-year old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment by Mlele District Magistrate’s Court in Katavi Region for defiling a six-year old girl.
Passing the judgment on Friday, the trial magistrate, Mr Teotimus Swai, told the court that the witnesses summoned by the Prosecution to substantiate its case, proved beyond reasonable doubt that the convict, Jilulu Lusinde, from Kamsisi Village, committed the crime.
“I have been convinced by the Prosecution which has proved its case beyond reasonable doubt that the convict did commit the crime…. I condemn you (the convict) to life incarceration; this harsh sentence will deter others who are itching to commit similar felony.
” Earlier, prosecuting, Inspector of Police, Mr Baraka Hongoli charged before the court that the convict committed the crime on September 09 last year, during the evening at a house belonging to the parents of the minor, who is in Standard One at Malauduki Primary School in the district.
Mr Hongoli further charged that on that material evening while the minor’s parents had gone to attend a wedding ceremony, the child was left alone in the house and it was at that moment the convict pounced on the child and defiled her.
It was further alleged that the child raised alarm that attracted a crowd from the neighbourhood that rushed to the scene of incident and subsequently caught him in the act.
Mr Hongoli further told the court that the girl was rushed to a public health facility at Inyonga Small for medical checkup and treatment and the medical reports show that the child was defiled.
